Interview conducted by Esmeralda Meraz as part of the LDS Hispanic American Oral History Project by the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies at Brigham Young University on 22 March 1991. Espinel talks about growing up in Quito, Ecuador and his conversion to the Mormon Church there. He talks about his migration to the United States and his experiences at Brigham Young University.

Plans for the David O. McKay building began in 1952 after an evaluation by the Brigham Young University College of Education concluded that the existing building for the College of Education were no longer meeting the growing needs of the program. Plans were officially announced in February of 1954 with the completion deadline being set for December of the same year.
